Oral Examination

Prior To Having Your Wisdom Teeth Removed Watsonville Dentist, Dr. Jesse Halbleib will examine your teeth and evaluate the position of your Wisdom Teeth.

Dr. Jesse Halbleib recommends a consultation to determine if it is appropriate to remove the wisdom teeth or not. This is based on the age of the patient, the position of the developing wisdom teeth, the health of the adjacent teeth or missing teeth. It takes time for newly erupted teeth to fully form and attach, too. Every person is an individual, and that person may benefit with the retention of his or her wisdom teeth.

At the Watsonville Dentist office, Dr. Jesse Halbleib offers a comprehensive examination of the mouth, including an oral inspection and the use of x-rays to evaluate the position of wisdom teeth, so patients can avoid any potential future problems. Research suggests that early detection and treatment leads to a better outcome for patients. During a teenager’s dental visit, Dr. Jesse Halbleib will exam their wisdom teeth as part of our routine exam. Contact us today to schedule your appointment.

WHY SHOULD I HAVE MY WISDOM TEETH REMOVED?

If you’re experiencing difficulty with your third molars and find that there’s simply not enough room in your mouth for them to properly emerge, you may run into a host of issues. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause all sorts of problems, ranging from discomfort and pain to more severe oral health concerns. For this reason, it’s important to have them removed before they become fully developed. Depending on the individual, this may happen as early as age 12 or 13, while others may not experience issues until their early twenties. Although problems associated with impacted wisdom teeth can occur at any age, those over the age of 30 are at an increased risk. To avoid complications, it’s best to seek treatment as early as possible.

Some of the possible problems related to not removing your wisdom teeth include:

Infection Wisdom Teeth Watsonville

INFECTION

The most frequent clinical problem we see is pericoronitis, (a localized gum infection). Without enough room for total eruption, the gum tissue around the wisdom tooth can become irritated and infected, resulting in recurrent pain, swelling, and problems with chewing and/or swallowing.

CYST FORMATION Wisdom Teeth Watsonville

CYST FORMATION

Non-infectious diseases may also arise in association with an impacted wisdom tooth. Cysts are fluid-filled “balloons” inside the jaw bone that develop as a result of impacted teeth and slowly expand destroying adjacent jaw bone and occasionally teeth. They can be very difficult to treat if your wisdom teeth are not removed in your teenage years. Although rare, tumors can be associated with the delayed removal of wisdom teeth.

Over Crowding Wisdom Teeth Watsonville

POSSIBLE CROWDING

Impacted wisdom teeth may contribute to crowding of your teeth. This is most noticeable with the front teeth, primarily the lower front teeth and is most commonly seen after a patient has had braces. There are a number of factors that cause teeth to crowd after braces or in early adulthood. Retained, impacted wisdom teeth may be a contributing factor. Unless you have an active problem when you see the oral surgeon, the reason for removal is primarily to prevent long-term damage to your teeth, gums and jaw bone.

DAMAGE TO ADJACENT TEETH Wisdom Teeth Watsonville

DAMAGE TO ADJACENT TEETH

If there is inadequate room to clean around the wisdom tooth, the tooth directly in front, the second molar, can be adversely affected resulting in gum disease, bone loss around the tooth, and/or decay.

WHAT DOES WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL COST AND IS IT COVERED BY INSURANCE?

The fee for your treatment is determined by a number of factors. These may include the difficulty involved in removing your teeth and which type of anesthesia is best for you. During your consultation appointment, the surgeon will need to review your x-rays, complete an examination and determine the best option for anesthesia, before an accurate estimate can be provided. Every insurance company has a different policy regarding the extent of coverage for a given surgical procedure. Capitola Dentist, Dr. Jesse Halbleibs team will help you obtain maximum insurance coverage for your treatment.
